Go, Helen, Go!
GO Transit recently changed the schedules.
Juggled them around to add an extra train to our line.
They cancelled my normal train, but added one
several minutes before and
several minutes after.
It was enough of a difference that
I made the choice to come in even earlier.
So I'm catching the 7:03.
Sadly, GTB is catching a later train.
And I miss our morning bitch sessions.
Sending visual daggers at the morons who
talk too loud,
play pop music on their cell phones,
and insist on encroaching on your personal space.
I really missed him this morning ...
It was a wonderfully quiet ride in.
Everyone was sleeping or reading.
The few people who were talking were whispering.
It was bliss.
And it was shattered in the last 10 minutes of the ride.
"Hello?!
Hello, Helen.
Thought I'd call you and say hi.
Yes, I did try to call you.
Just a few minutes ago.
Yes, I thought I'd call and say hi."
Heads snap up at the intrusion.
We look around to see who's shouting.
Some idiot, three quads away from me,
is talking very loudly on the phone.
He starts telling Helen about his headaches,
and how the medication the doctor gave him isn't working.
But the therapist he's seeing with his wife
wants to start having more frequent sessions.
He's been making an effort to do things her way,
but he is coming in to work an hour earlier
and staying later.
Everyone is looking at each other,
with looks of "Is This Guy Serious?!"
People are popping up in their seats and
turning around to see who's talking.
He just talks louder.
The woman sitting in my quad turns to look behind her
to see who's shouting.
She turns to her husband, who's sitting beside me.
"Who's talking?"
He points the guy out.
I say to them:
"If I was his wife,
I'd leave him for telling the whole train our business."
The other coupled laughed.
The guy says, as we're pulling into the station,
"Pat him on the shoulder as you walk by
and tell him everything will be ok."
The usual fun commute, but not the same without GTB.

It's personal
I know I bitch and moan about the GO Train.
A lot.
You would too, if you took it on a regular basis.
Today's B&M --
not to be confused with a plain old BM,
which is a whole other pile of crap--
is about personal hygiene.
We're not talking about daily showering.
Although, some commuters could do with a hint.
Or two.
Personal hygiene is called personal hygiene for a reason.
It's PERSONAL.
That means you don't do it in public.
Ever.
I'm talking about two things that really REALLY irk me:
1. Makeup
If you're running late for work,
do not ... and I can't stress this enough ...
DO NOT
put on a full face of make up on the train.
Dabbing on a little lipstick is okay.
But to sit with an open makeup bag on your lap
with compacts and tubes and pens
laid out before you
is not cool.
Nor is it even remotely pretty.
If you didn't have time to do it at home,
wait 'till you get to the office and do it there.
By far, the worst offence is the grossest of gross.
I can't believe that people do this in public:
2. Nails
There are people who regularly cut their nails
with a nail clipper
on the GO Train.
That little shard of nail becomes airborne
and flies god-knows-where.
The sound, alone, makes me cringe.
tink, tink, tink
*shudder*
People freak out when they see a hair lying somewhere.
Do you know how many germs are on our hands?
Under our fingernails?!
OMG!
I'm just waiting for the day I actually see someone
whip off a sock and start doing their toes.
For the love of all that is good, people,
take care of your personal hygiene at home!
A lot.

Coffee as a Weapon
My GO Train buddy brought my attention to this article the other morning.
Said he immediately thought of me when he read it.
M'Licious sent me a link to the article.
Said she immediately thought of me when she read it.
My rep precedes me.
I really don't know what to think of this. First of all, I know from first-hand experience that what you read in the newspaper is NEVER the whole truth. So I'm a little sceptical about the real story behind this. The guy admits that he cut her off. But did he just cut her off or was he a jackass about it? Maybe he cuts her off every day and she's had enough. Maybe he cut her off and she spilled her coffee. Who knows?
Should the lady have reacted the way she did? Probably not. Would I? I like to think I wouldn't. But getting on the GO Train is a dog-eat-dog environment and people are vicious. You start to get annoyed when the same people, every day, butt in front of you. You can't help but defend yourself. Me ... I just make a point of stepping on their heels.
Besides, I absolutely love coffee. Why waste a good cuppa joe?

Brainless Twits
I'm beginning to believe that it is a requirement to be the recipient of a lobotomy in order to land a job at GO Transit.
Like a lot of people, I subscribe to their "service" (and I use that term loosely) where they will email you whenever there is a delay. Needless to say, this is a useless service.
Last night, I attempted to catch the 17:53 train home. At 18:17 (do the math), I received an email on my Blackberry:
The Union 17:53 - Oshawa 18:38 train trip is operating 15 minutes late due to earlier equipment issues.
15 minutes?
Add much?
Morons!
This morning, at 10:28 (again, do the math), I received this:
The Union 10:13 - Oshawa 11:08 train trip is estimated to be delayed 10-15 minutes from Union due to earlier operational issues and an earlier police investigation.
Can these people even tell time? Or add? I know that I'm mathematically challenged, but even I can figure out that it's EXACTLY 15 minutes behind. Not 10 minutes or perhaps 12 or even possibly 14. Exactly 15 minutes.
Now, I admit, I'm not even on this train. But as a subscriber, I get all the emails, regardless of time. I'm willing to bet, though, that it's well beyond 15 minutes late.
And GO Transit wonders why everyone is pissed off at them.

GO Strikes Again!
WARNING:
The following blog may contain scenes of violence and extreme language.
Reader discretion is advised.
In other words, go get a snack kiddies cuz Auntie Mo is very upset right now and needs to use some grown up words.
Shoo.
Go watch Dora.
Are they gone?
Alright.
Let's get down to business ... Remember, you were warned ...
To use Frani's current favourite word, GO Transit was a complete ClusterFuck last night.
I was scheduled to work late last night. Normally I would work until 9, but times are tough and HR is trying to cut back on overtime, so I was told that there's nothing going on so I could leave at 7. But I'm looking at the piles of filing on my desk and I call The Husband to say that I'm going to catch the 8:13 cuz I want to get some work done.
So I'm puttering away. Making some progress on the piles. When I receive a notification email from GO Transit.
7:31 PM - GO Train Delay
Due to a bridge inspection East of Union Station, passengers travelling both West and East bound can expect delays and some modified service. Update to follow.
sigh. Alright. I'll deal. It may take a little longer to get home, but these things happen. Having worked at an engineering firm, I'm thinking that they're doing tests on the overpass and the train needs to pass more slowly or stop while equipment is moved into place. No biggie, I'm thinking.

7:35 PM - GO Train Cancellation(s)
The Oshawa 18:41 - Union 19:38 train trip will terminate at Danforth due to a bridge inspection. The Union 19:13-Oshawa 20:08 train trip will originate at Danforth due to a bridge inspection.
Oh for pete's sake! I call GO Transit to find out WTF? Cuz the times are off on the email. If they really mean the 7:13 train, then sending out an email at 7:35 and expecting us to take the subway to Danforth to catch the train that leaves at :23 after the hour isn't going to fly! Morons!
Buddy at GO Transit tells me they're not sure how long it will take. It may take hours. Apparently pieces of the bridge are falling off onto the track and this is causing a hazard. No shit, Sherlock! He says they're recommending passengers take the TTC to Danforth and catch the train there. At this point, it's 7:45. The train will be leaving Danforth at 8:23. I may or may not have enough time to get there. I happened to have a TTC token in my desk. I grab it and my coat and run out the door.
I have to take two different lines to get to Danforth and, of course, the timing isn't right so I have to wait 5 minutes at Bloor. I'm anxiously looking at my watch. I'm not going to make it. I know it.
There's one stop on the Bloor-Danforth line that is outside. My Blackberry buzzes. I have an email. It's GO Transit.
8:00 - GO Train Service Resumes
The bridge inspection East of Union Station has been completed and service has resumed both East and West bound. Passengers can expected (sic) some minor delays while service returns to normal.
You gotta be kidding me. I don't believe this. I'm halfway there. Probably won't make it in time. Can't go back. My eye is starting to twitch.
I get to Danforth. Run like a maniac up two flights of stairs, out the doors, towards the GO Train and I can hear the train bells. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding.
FUCK!!!
I missed the gawdam train. I'm SO pissed off at this point. I call The Husband. Swear like a sailor, hang up on him (sorry about that Hon!) and stomp back to the TTC. I'm thinking about what to do.
My only experience with the Danforth station was last year. The train engine died so they dumped everyone out at Danforth. We were asked to stand on the platform. It was January with a windchill of -20C. The train sat on the tracks with the doors closed. The station was closed because these smaller stations are not open off rush-hour times. My assumption last night, therefore, was that the station wouldn't be open, and I didn't want to sit in the cold and wait for the train. There was no way I could make it back to Union in time to catch the 9:13. Which would mean waiting until 10:13 for the next train. So I took the TTC up to York Mills. Waited for the bus to take me all the way out to Ajax. I got home after 10.
Once I was home, I did nothing but cuss and scream and whine. The Husband is a saint for taking all that.
When I woke up this morning, I was feeling calmer. I went to customer service and very calmly and politely asked them what the cut-off time was for a refund on delays. She said 45 minutes. I asked what was going to happen with the Danforth issue last night. She said if I went to Danforth, then they would refund the cost of the trip to Danforth, which is more than the cost of a TTC token. "I used two tokens," I pointed out. "I missed the train and decided to go up to York Mills to take the bus home." "Why didn't you just stay at Danforth?" she asked. And I explained that I didn't actually get to the station when I saw the train leave. And I explained my previous freezing Danforth experience. She looked stunned. "They did that?!" Yeah, they did that. "OK. We'll give you two refunds. Just apply them to the purchase of your monthly pass next month."
She was really nice and we had a laugh when I pointed out that yesterday GO Transit announced a price hike. Good timing, morons! I knew I was really pissed off yesterday and I didn't want to yell at the customer service rep. It's not her fault. So I apologized to her. "I didn't yell at you, did I?" She laughed. "No, actually, you seemed a little scared when you first came in." That's cuz I was afraid I was going to lose my cool and scream at you.
All in all, I feel better. Although I'm sure the girls in the coffee room this morning thought otherwise. It's a little difficult to stay calm when GO is constantly messing up.
From now on, I'm getting a refund every time GO Transit screws up.
Screw you guys and the horse you came in on!

Is that a paper in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
There's this weird guy on my GO Train. He usually sits in the same car as me. He has a piece of cigarette packaging, the largest panel of the pack, which he has intricately folded into a small accordion. He sits on the train, every day, with his eyes closed, and obsessively folds and unfolds the cigarette panel. With lightening fast speed.
Fold.
Unfold.
Fold.
Unfold.
It's funny and just a little creepy.
This morning, the GO Train was six minutes late. That may not sound like a big deal, but as I've pointed out before, this means that the riders who intend to take the next train are already on the platform and are getting on with us. Resulting in standing room only.
I managed to get a seat. The last seat in a quad, sitting in front of some university student doing his homework.
Cigarette Guy ends up standing beside Homework Dude. And I'm watching Cigarette Guy. It's clear that his OCD is getting the better of him. He's obviously uncomfortable, shifting from leg to leg, hands in pocket, out of pocket, back in pocket. He finally settles with one hand grasping the handle behind Homework Dude and the other in his pocket.
The pocket that has his cigarette accordion.
And he begins to manipulate his accordion inside his pocket. His hand is moving quickly and his pocket is punching in and out.
Homework Dude lifts his head. Glances at Cigarette Guy's crotch. Eyebrows go up. I bite my lip to keep from laughing. I lift my book up so I can't see, because if I watch the pocket hockey, I'm going to start giggling.
I'm tellin' ya ... never a dull moment on the GO Train.
Fold.
Unfold.

GO Transit Survey
GO Transit sent out a Customer Service survey today.
Specifically, the survey was about their E-News Alerts.
This is a service where they email you regarding any delays exceeding 30 minutes.
There were a variety of multiple choice questions, alluding to the fact that they are thinking of improving this service. Hmph! We'll just see about that!
There were two questions that allowed a comment.
Question #1:
What do you like most about GO Transit’s E-News alert service? (list two)
PARDON?!
What the hell makes you so sure I have something nice to say?
And who are you to tell me how many items I'm supposed to list?!
I could only think of one thing. So I answered:
The fact that I can receive them on my mobile.
I know it's ambiguous and non-committal.
But I had to say something.
I mean, I'm about to lambaste them.
I should at least temper it with a compliment.
However vague it is.
Question #2:
Do you have any suggestions to help us improve our E-News alerts service?
Are you kidding?
Is there even enough room for my answer??!
So I wrote (and I quote):
Consistency in delivery of the message, both in timing and message, needs to be improved.
Often a second message is sent almost immediately after the first, which cites a different reason for the delay.
Often a message is sent citing a 30 minute delay and the message is sent when the delay has already exceeded 30 minutes.
This has nothing to do with the E-News service, but since GO Transit doesn't seem to have the wherewithal to send other customer service surveys, I'm taking advantage of this opportunity.
The Lakeshore line is by far the most problematic line. Delays are ridiculous and passengers are becoming extremely irate at the price we pay for a service that seems to be non-existent. I recently read on a GO Transit blog a suggestion that GO Transit simply cancels a particular train if it knows it will be delayed more than 45 minutes (which I understand is your cut-off point for a delay) thereby not including that particular scheduled run in the delay statistics. This results in better performance on paper. If this is true, that behaviour is deplorable, unconscionable and simply appalling.
The Lakeshore line is a busy line. I get on the train at Ajax. Most days I get a seat. But some days I don't. If the train is delayed so much as 10 minutes, the passengers arriving to catch the following train are already on the platform and will get on the train. The result is that the train is often full when it arrives at Ajax. The Pickering passengers don't have a hope! There's a train that starts at Pickering and goes to Union. Why not have a train that starts at Ajax or Whitby?
Announcements made at Union Station are barely audible on the platform. It's a train station, people! Trains make noise. If you think we can hear your announcement on the PA system when a train is in the station, you're as inept as we all think you are.
I'll let you know if they respond.

Announcements made at Union Station are barely audible on the platform. It's a train station, people! Trains make noise. If you think we can hear your announcement on the PA system when a train is in the station, you're as inept as we all think you are.
I'll let you know if they respond.
